Imagine trying to hold a huge balloon under the water...it's hard work right? Holding down a lifetime of negative experiences and emotions feels the same way.... hard work. Often we don't know that we are doing this because we have been doing it for so long that its becomes the way we always feel. We think its normal. We tell ourselves it's just our personality... angry, depressive, fearful, or anxious. The thing is though, we usually instinctively know that we didn't feel this anger, sadness or anxiety when we were little. Somewhere along the line it became how we always felt.
When you have difficult experiences (often in childhood or as a young adult) without the necessary skills to interpret and resolve the issues, your Unconscious Mind stores the experience along with the negative emotions so you can resolve it later. That's one of the major functions of your Unconscious Mind. Not only does it heal your physical body it is also programmed to heal your emotional body in exactly the same way. If you're lucky, another life experience will come along that reminds you of that earlier experience and you will resolve it. Unfortunately some of these significant life experiences are never resolved and we carry the pain of them with us for life.
Our memories, our decisions, our experiences good and bad are collected in our Unconscious Mind and determine how we relate and respond to the world. When we have unresolved negative emotions associated with past experiences they can affect our lives so much that we are unable to cope.
If you were to stop and think about it, you might discover that you have your past arranged in a certain way so that you can tell the difference between it and the future. Otherwise, how would you know which event was in the past and which event was in the future? How would you know whether you were looking at a memory of the past or a memory of the future? But you do know the difference. How you know the difference is dependant on the way you encode the memories of the past and future - it's how you store the information in your brain. Everyone stores time in a linear way on some form of Time-Line.
Our memories as we store them are arranged in a gestalt, which means simply that memories around a certain subject are often connected like a string of pearls. The impact of the gestalt is that accessing a gestalt (say all events associated with fear) will often bring up a constructed memory that is a synthesis of all memories on that certain subject.
You can access your Time-Line in therapy going back to significant life events that caused you pain or distress and release the negative emotions on that event, learn what you needed to learn and resolve them. Because your Unconscious Mind stores your memories on a gestalt you can then also release all the negative emotions (anger, fear, sadness, hurt, guilt etc) on all the similar events back to now.
TLT allows us to access stored memories in your Unconscious Mind and to release negative emotions attached to those memories. Unresolved issues from the past can be the cause of inappropriate or unwarranted anger, rage, sadness, guilt, anxiety, depression and fear. When you let go of the past you feel like a whole new person!
