Overeating is as we all know one of the hardest addictions to kick. It’s an addiction just like smoking, drinking, drugs, gambling and sex except what makes it really hard is that you can’t just go cold turkey and use your willpower to stop. You have to eat. And it’s not just a condoned addiction it is encouraged by advertising, fast food chains and little old grannies in aprons shouting “Eat, eat!”

Overeating is a compulsive behaviour that is driven by a wide variety of emotional issues. We often don’t have the same commitment to ourselves because we don’t love ourselves as much as we love our kids and we were brought up to believe that putting ourselves last, self-sacrifice and eating the burnt chop make us somehow closer to heaven. None of that is true! When you love yourself, really love yourself you are a better mother, wife, husband, daughter, father, sister, employee much more fun to be around, in control of your life and don’t have weight issues! Let me clear something up here. If you are fat and happy I applaud you and a whole lot of people are envious and there is nothing wrong with that, provided your health is OK. But I have never really met a fat, happy woman given the society we live in and the constant messages we are bombarded with. I’ve met a lot of people who pretended to be fat and happy for a while but usually deep down somewhere they wish they were thin or they’ve just given up, accepted their size and decided to make the most of themselves. Again not a bad tactic at all if it works for you. So, what to do and where to from here. In the following pages I have outlined a path forward. Please bear in mind what I have already said. You are the expert on you, you have to take sole responsibility for what works for you and what doesn’t and your journey will be unique You are the captain of your own ship and there is no magic wand. You will be successful to the extent that you commit yourself and you allow yourself to succeed. Some people do not want to solve their problems. It’s called ‘secondary gain’. Women in particular manage to hang on to their fat against all odds because of reasons like:- My husband might leave me if I lose weight I’m going to tell you something very important now so pay attention...... You believe what you want to believe, there is no such thing as ‘the truth’ There are no facts, there is no reality other than the one you decide on. Quantum physics has brought us a long way in our understanding of how we construct our worlds. We all live in unique separate universes. No two people ever see anything the same way. We may share a common view of something but we all see the world not as it is but as we are. We filter everything that comes into our neurology and physiology through our experiences, beliefs, values and conditioning. Nothing is actually real. It’s all a wonderful illusion. When you really understand this it is extremely liberating. Stop trying to get everyone else to understand you and see things your way. Give it up. Stop trying to understand everyone in your life, give that up to. They probably don’t understand themselves anyway so how are you going to understand them. You always have and always will assign meaning, your meaning, to everyone and everything in your life. And you assign meaning to you. Whatever your personal and weight issues are you get to decide what you believe to be true about them. A belief after all is not real either. A belief is just a thought that you think over and over again You make your beliefs real by giving them your attention and deciding to believe in them. And if your beliefs aren’t serving you, you can change them. You do it all the time. When in your life did you believe that someone you knew was a great person only to find out later that they were actually quite awful. When did you believe that all your weight problems were going to be solved by just giving up fat (OK the weight loss guru’s sold you this one but you believed it like we all did!). The point is you change your beliefs at will and you can, if you choose, believe that you are never going to be thinner, you can believe that therapy won’t work for you or you can believe that it will. Your choice. You get to decide. We are all chock a block full of beliefs that we have picked up along our life experience. Beliefs like ‘All the women in my family are large so I am always going to be’ or ‘I’m never going to be thinner’ or ‘I have a slow metabolism’ aren’t helping you to create the thinner you that you’d like to be. But you could change those beliefs to ‘my metabolism just burns full bore all day’ or ‘I am going to be the first woman in my family to be thin’ if you want to. Now I’m going to tell you the next really important thing you need to know…. You create your body in every moment of your existence with You are creating your fatness over and over again in every moment because of what you choose to think, how you choose to feel and what you choose to do. Now I have already said that your Unconscious Mind motivates a lot of your thoughts, emotions and behaviours but you are also programming your UM with your conscious thoughts. Every time you say to yourself “God I hate my thighs, I’m so fat I make myself sick” your UM which just does as it is told and has no sense of humour responds with ‘OK, no problems I can make you fat if that’s what you want I’ll just ramp up your appetite, slow down your metabolism and make you too tired to exercise.’ I’m not kidding, this is exactly how you work. See how powerful you are? Now are you beginning to understand why you still have weight issues after all these years of diets, exercising, starving yourself and fads. None of them will work while you keep focusing on your fat. Next important thing to know. What you focus on grows in your reality It’s quantum physics. Where you decide you are going to put your attention determines what you see in your reality. You know this is true. What happened when you got that new car? Everywhere you looked you saw them didn’t you. What happened when you got pregnant? Suddenly there were pregnant women everywhere? As human beings we have a limit to the amount of information we can process in any one second. Millions of pieces of information are coming into our neurology and physiology every second so we have to decide and choose what to focus on. We choose what to pay attention to. If you are constantly paying attention to food it is because out of habit you have chosen to do that. If you are constantly paying attention to how fat your feel that’s a habit too and that’s why you keep recreating your fatness. It’s what you are focusing on…probably constantly! And you are adding to the creation by giving it lots of the fuel of creation…your emotions. I bet every time you focus on that part of your body you hate the most you feel an overwhelming emotional response. A strong e-motion is energy-in-motion and fuels the creation of your future self When you feel strong self-loathing you are guaranteeing that you will create exactly the thing you do not want, in this case your fat, in your future. Your Unconscious Mind, the part of you that is in charge of your body, does just what you tell it to and creates your health, your body and your life with your thoughts and emotions and actions. You can if you wish focus your attention, your conscious mind on something else….the blue sky, your pet, how good you feel, the happy smiles on your kids faces…it doesn’t matter what. The point is, you choose! You are not held captive by your habits, they are just behaviours you have practiced over and over again until your Unconscious Mind starts to carry them out for you beyond your conscious awareness How many times did you focus your conscious awareness on driving a car until it became such a habit that now you can get into the car, buckle up and take your conscious mind somewhere else completely until your find that you have arrived at work totally oblivious to the hundreds of small actions it took to get you there. You do it all the time. Your Unconscious Mind usually drives your car, walks you to the fridge and puts that Tim Tam in your mouth. You programmed it to do that in one way or another. Perhaps it was the five thousand times you did it before or perhaps it was the sound of your brothers/fathers/boyfriend’s voice telling you that you had a fat bum that motivated the unconscious behaviour. Whatever. It’s just programming and programming can be changed. You do it, you decide what you are going to let in and out of your UM. You choose.
